Chapter I : Getting to know London

London is one of the largest cities in the world. Home to numerous attractions, this popular tourist destination has something to offer for everyone. Whether you love nature, history or architecture, London will never disappoint you.

With Covid gone, the tourism industry in big cities are thriving again. London in no different. Every year, it welcomes millions of visitors to enjoy its offerings. For last few years, more than 20 million international tourists have visited London annually.$^1$ And this number is increasing significantly every season. If you expect to be a part of this, a basic guide like this will undoubtedly be useful to be well prepared before you set the foot out.

For a tourist, it’s extremely important to know as much as possible about a place before visiting it because you -

London at a glance

London is not just a regular metropolitan. It’s in fact a very old city thriving from the Roman period. As a result, the architectures of London was influenced by a mixture of Roman style along with later civilizations - medieval structures, Georgian semi-modern houses and finally modern high rise buildings, to name a few.$^2$

In this day, London is home to almost 9 million people. It extends on average of 20-25 miles in all directions. The city is divided into 32 boroughs, each governed by its own council. The strength of London is its diversity. People of all cultures, religions and colours live here in harmony.

It’s well known for the abundance of public transport, more than any other city in the world. Buses, trains and trams are available 24/7 all around the city. Although there are roads that are not quiet welcoming to cyclists. But the city is constantly trying to be bicycle friendly.

Chapter II : Food & Accommodation

As said earlier, London is a city full of diversity. So it’s not surprising that the same can be said for its culinary culture. Spreaded across the city, restaurants of different culture can be found in abundant.

The most popular food among the Brits is of course Fish and chips, which can be said the “national food” of the country. But it’s not the best food to try to be honest. Another common food that teenagers like here is Chicken and chips. Yes, chips again. British people have found ways to eat potato in many creative ways - chips, mashed potato, jacked potato, to name few.

Indian cuisine is one of the most popular food here in London. The mouth watering curries and biriyanis are a treat to the mouth - a must try. Unfortunately proper Indian food is not available in most of these places. As white people cannot take too much spice, they adopt their food to less spice, which affects the authentic taste. So it’s crucial to find a reliable restaurant to taste the authentic Indian food. Most of the Indian restaurants serve wine as well.

Recently, Turkish food has become the new favourite of Londoners. There are numerous Turkish food places around the city, and the number is growing every year. Turkish kebabs are one of the most popular foods in London.

African foods are also in plenty here. Although not as popular as the above two, many African restaurants are becoming known to wider audience. Especially for Muslims, who have to look for Halal places, Somalian restaurants has a major share in such cases.
